Toward Greener Pastures for 80 Starving Horses

Yesterday, our HSUS team was on the road again, this time in Cannon County, Tennessee, rescuing 84 horses, two goats, eight dogs, and 15 chickens from absolutely deplorable and unacceptable conditions.

A Wiser Home on the Range for Wild Horses

For a classic example of how poor implementation can undermine the original intent of legislation, look no further than the Bureau of Land Management and its efforts to protect wild horses and burros under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.

U.S. Fur Sales Lowest in Nearly 20 Years

The fur industry seems to be facing a perfect storm, and fur-bearing animals may be the lucky beneficiaries.

Research Proposal: Don't Buy Dogs, Cats from B Dealers

The vast majority of research facilities now refuse to do business with Class B dealers, but propping up this dying industry are approximately 50 research institutions -- mostly universities. Please ask them to stop buying dogs and cats from Class B dealers.

An update on some actions we’ve undertaken this week to turn around bad situations for animals.

Race for Survival: Rescue of 100 Sled Dogs

Yesterday, The HSUS's Emergency Services team and our global arm, Humane Society International, partnered with the SPCA Laurentides-Labelle in Quebec to rescue approximately 100 neglected sled dogs.

Talk Back: Ohio’s Issue 2, Opposition

Your comments on two posts from last week that take our opponents to task for their effort to retard reform.

An Eagle Eye on Wildlife

Last Friday, I paid a visit to our newest animal care center—the SPCA Wildlife Care Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. It’s one of five animal care centers we operate, with three specializing in rescuing and releasing wildlife. It handles nearly 14,000 animals a year, including raptors, raccoons, rabbits, and turtles.

Buyer Beware: Cruel Isn't Cool

On Wednesday night, I was at the Bowery Hotel in New York City, co-hosting the awards ceremony for our fur-free campaign's Cool vs. Cruel Competition—a joint project of The Humane Society of the United States and the Art Institutes that recognizes fashion design students who come up with creative alternatives to animal fur. We recognize the top students at the event, and each year, I am so impressed with their work, reminding us yet again that’s there’s just no reason to kill fur-bearing animals for our fashion tastes.

Have You Seen Our New Website?

This week we’re giving animals a revamped and, we hope, a more appealing stage to showcase their beauty, their majesty and, yes, when warranted, their plight. Check it out—it’s our redesigned website.

WELCOME TO ANIMALS FIRST! Where diversity, ideas and thinking out of the box have value! We are short on rules, but mainly be respectful and learn to accept that others have opposing viewpoints... and be over 18 years of age. Most of all, have fun!

We are here to promote RESPONSIBLE pet guardianship, proper care and nutrition for our animals, and to act as a voice for those who have no voice.

“Some people, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty - they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.” ~ Martin Buxbaum

There is a fundamental tenet held among most animal welfare and animal rights advocates that we accept as incontrovertible. That precept was perhaps best articulated by Mahatma Gandhi when he said, “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress is best judged by how we treat our animals”. This principle expresses the belief that when a community is compassionate enough to care about the needs of its animals there can be a reasonable expectation that the bar is raised on how we care and treat one another.

IN MEMORY OF RAIN
The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears. ~Arabian Proverb

Don't Cry For The Horses
By: Susan Humphrey

They were ours as a gift, but never to keep,
As they close their eyes forever to sleep.
Their spirits unbound,
On silver wings they fly.
A million white horses,
Against the blue sky.
Look up into heaven,
You'll see them above.
The horses we lost,
The horses we loved.
Manes and tails flowing,
As they gallop through time,
They were never yours- they were never mine.
Don't cry for the horses,
They'll be back some day.
When our time is gone,
They will show us the way.
Do you hear that soft nicker?
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses,
Love the ones that are here.

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. "I have done something," He replied, "I created you."
The Animal's Savior, Jim Willis 1999

Tilly has proved herself to be a real STAR!

My little crossbreed terrier Tilly, whose book Tilly's Tale will soon be released by 4RV Publishing under my 'Harry Porter' pseudonym, proved herself to be a real star last night. we were on the field near our home walking our dogs, when one of them was attacked by a vicious schnauzer who pinned him to the ground. In a flash, Tilly ran thirty yards and pounced on the attacker and pulled it away from Jarvis, who is 14 years old, almost blind and very deaf, and staying with us as a guest while his… Continue
